Sadly we lost part of our history with the passing of John Archer, our Executive Director when we were known as the British Canadian Trade Association before the turn of the century.
John was a true British gentleman and his organizational skills did much towards the success of the Association within the Corporate sector. He served us well with his wide knowledge of those British businesses with interests across Canada.
As our Executive Director John was the liaison with our Divisions in Montreal and Vancouver and with our efforts to establish new Divisions in Calgary and Ottawa.
Our Christmas lunches were legendary across Canada with over 1,500 members and guests in attendance. The success of these was in no small part due to the efforts of John Archer.
A glance through the always popular “Connections” magazine, which he published, shows the strength of his contribution in growing the Corporate membership.
Big names in the International/Canadian business world helped to swell the coffers and provide a base for the business and social programmes at the time.
He was the first President of EUCOCIT, a body representing all European Chambers and also saw our Chamber through its move to new premises in the mid 90’s.
It was my privilege to work with John as your President 20 years ago and I salute a friend whose contribution will never be forgotten.
A Past President of the Toronto St George’s Society, John had expressed a wish there be no funeral service and that his ashes be scattered at St James Cemetery at the St George plot. Donations to a charity of your choice in John’s name would be appreciated by the family.
To Eileen and the family we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences at this difficult time.
